EVERY DAY Book Response

"Every Day" by David Levithan
Character Purpose
The main character, A, from David Levithan's book, Every Day, is a very unique character. Every day he wakes up in a different body. This has been happening since he was born. At midnight, every night, he changes bodies and lives.
A is driven by his love for Rhiannon, a girl he meets while inhabiting the body of Rhiannon's boyfriend, Justin. Whenever A wakes up in a new body, he checks to see whether he's close to Rhiannon's town, and tries to find ways to reach her.
When A is in the body of Nathan Daldry, who owns a car, A realizes he can drive to a party where Rhiannon will be. He meets her there, as Nathan, and stays at the party as long as he can to be with her.
When A realizes it's almost midnight, he has to leave and pulls over on the side of the road to sleep, so that his passage to the next body will go smoothly, and he won't be violently ripped from one body to another. He does this, even though he knows that Nathan will wake up in his car on the side of the road and not know how he got there.
Because A wakes up in a different body every day, he never gets attached to anything. He doesn't really have a purpose, or his own life. He hasn't been able to develop any friendships of his own, he has no daily routines, and no family. Meeting Rhiannon finally gives him a purpose, even though he interacts with her as different people every day.
At first Rhiannon doesn't believe that these people she's meeting are him. She makes A prove that he is the same person by telling her a story of all the times they've met, in extreme detail, so that she'll know it's him. By doing this, he's slowly gaining her trust. Rhiannon gives him a reason to live every day.
Although I'm not finished with the book yet, I hope Rhiannon is able to see A for who he truly is inside, no matter who he is on the outside.
