KEVIN BROOKS: BEING

I'm reading the book Being, by Kevin Brooks.  Being is about a 16 year-old-boy named Robert Smith.  Robert's unique story starts in a doctor's waiting room. Doctors are running tests on Robert, and instead of blood, the doctors find a bizarre, multi-colored liquid that switches and flitters from it's liquid form to a solid, and back again.

Robert recovers from his anesthesia, and realizes the situation he is in. Mysterious men wearing suits, and holding guns are in his room, guarding his door. They bark orders at the doctors. Robert has to figure out how he got there and why.

He escapes from the hospital, determined to find the truth behind the mystery inside his body, and starts a violent journey to do so.

Fans of movies like The Bourne Identity series are guaranteed to like this book. It's filled with action, mystery and sci-fi connections. What I like most about the book is the unearthly mystery of who or what Robert really is, set against the very earthly details of how Robert acts, his emotions, and his 'human-ness." Those aspects of his character make the book really interesting.

I'm excited to keep reading this novel to see what happens next.
