I am reading Welcome to Vietnam, by Zach Emerson. Welcome to Vietnam is about an 18-year-old soldier starting his military life on the battlefields of Vietnam during the war. This book isn't like other war books I've read.
The writing in Welcome to Vietnam stands out because it is written in the 3rd person, unlike other war books I've read, such as The Journal of Scott Pendleton Collins, by Walter Dean Myers — a journal of a soldier living through World War II — which is written in the first person,
Welcome to Vietnam feels unique in its 3rd person voice. In 1st person books you are more connected on a personal level and you can imaging you ARE the main character. In a 3rd person book, the reader's experience is more as an observer, making the story more cinematic and allowing the writer to switch in and out of the main character's and the secondary characters' thoughts.
Welcome to Vietnam is, so far, a very descriptive, well-written, and educational book. It really gives a distinct view of how the soldiers felt, and the hardships they had to face in the war.
